Wearing Eyeglasses Since the Sixth Grade
The first time I got eyeglasses I was in the sixth grade in the 1970's. We went to a local same day service company and I had an examination by the optometrist. He determined that I needed eyeglasses and we went to the downstairs eyeglass manufacturer. I picked out the pair of frames that I wanted and I must have gone through at least 500 pair before I found the pair that I thought wouldn't make me look so "nerdy". I found a perfect pair of wireframes that I thought would look "cool".
My parents and I left to get lunch and shop so the laboratory could grind the lenses and put them in the frames. When we returned to the optometrist my glasses were done and the doctor checked my eyes with my glasses on. He determined that everything was in order and I got out of the chair.
My parents and I were talking to the doctor and I wasn't paying attention to where I was going. Lo and behold I walked right into the door frame and almost knocked myself out! I was so embarrassed and the doctor teased me about maybe needing to check my eyes again. What an experience for a young, shy girl!
